Coffee shop’s in Lisbon to Take Shelter from the Cold

The view into the kitchen at Bread & Friends, located at number 8 on Avenida Fontes Pereira de Melo, stops passersby in their tracks. That’s because bakery chef Tiago Vaz starts his shift at 3:30 AM—four hours before the café opens at 7:30 AM—and his work is visible from the street. Inside, the scenery extends with a glass wall, making the entire process fully transparent and inviting customers to follow the production of both long-fermented bread and signature pastries. The concept, developed by the Sana group, also embraces the Portuguese coffee culture by featuring a roasting machine right at the entrance.

To warm up: Sit by the fireplace (yes, there is one) and enjoy the soup of the day (€2.50) or a freshly made creamy hot chocolate (€2.50), paired with a slice of red velvet cake (€3.50).
